3 March 2024 - New VividShaper features coming soon

Ever since the release of VividShaper, I had some great plans for upcoming versions. I was planning for smaller updates, but ended up with a quite big updated that unfortunately took much longer to finish. Most of the things are now in place, so I hope to release the next version within the next couple of days. This new version will include:

6 June 2023 - VividShaper

VividShaper has finally been submitted to App Store. I hope that it will be released within the next days.

Three years ago, I started to conceptualise VividShaper. I was inspired by Dave Smith's Evolver, which is a hardware wavetable synthesizer.

An empty track in a pattern will be shown in dark grey. If you have data of any sort in it, it will be shown in cyan colour.

I am also adding some new LFO functions: VSLFOSin, VSLFOTriangle, VSLFOSaw, and VSLFOSquare. About me

My name is Lars Forsberg. I am an engineering physicist with a PhD in medical science. I did my PhD at Karolinska Institutet on understanding how different brains vary and specifically how different brain regions covary across individuals. The findings showed that evolutionary old regions, the thalamus and the basal ganglia, covary the most. I am currently working as a researcher in Multiple Sclerosis, but I still have an interest in human brain variability.

Overview

VividTracker aims to be compatible with Protracker v2.3D and therefore has about the same features. In Protracker, a song can have up to 64 different patterns, which are played in a specific order. The length of the song can be up to 128 patterns. Each pattern has 64 rows (or steps), with position 00 to 63, and 4 different tracks (VividTracker supports up to 8 tracks), where each track can play one 8-bit sample at a time toget…

Historical overview

One of the first Wavetable synthesizers was the PPG Wavecomputer, which was released in 1978 and had 30 different wavetables. It was followed a few years later by the Wave 2 (1981), Wave 2.2 (1982), and Wave 2.3 (1984). Each wave had the length of 256 samples (probably one byte per sample). A wavetable is a table of waves that can be looped through to give an evolving sound. The PPG Wave 2.3 had 30 different wavetabl…

I must admit I haven't been that successful making games for iOS, but I enjoyed the fun anyhow. Here is the game Spinoid for iOS that I made a couple of years ago:

In the beginning

The Commodore Amiga was an amazing computer at its time. When the first Amiga was released in 1985, it was superior to anything on the market, both when it came to graphics and sound. It could display up to 4096 colours on the screen at the same time using its Hold-And-Modify (HAM) colour mode and it could play back 8-bit samples on four different channels using its amazing Paula chip. Two of the channels are sent to t…
